February 2014 brought the beta version of the Learning Mastery Gradebook.

The Learning Mastery view in Grades shows calculated results on any Outcome that has been used in assessments within the course. Unlike regular grades, Outcomes assessments are not manually entered by the teacher through the Learning Mastery view of the Gradebook, but rather originate from assessed Quizzes (that use Outcomes-aligned Question Banks) or Assignments (that use Outcomes as criteria in Rubrics).

The Learning Mastery view in Grades makes it much easier for teachers and administrators to monitor student's progress toward mastery of competencies, standards, or outcomes. It helps teachers immediately identify students who are struggling and may need intervention or remediation. The Learning Mastery view lets teachers balance traditional grading approaches that seek to measure students on individual assignments with measurements of student performance that are based on Outcomes that span multiple assignments -- even multiple courses.

And while the Learning Mastery view will represent those Outcomes aligned with more traditional objective assessments such as Quizzes and exams, we hope it will also encourage teachers to use formative assessments (assessments designed to provide rich feedback for student improvement) and even authentic assessments (assessments designed to reflect or connect to the real world).
